Internship: Transpacific National Bank

Brief Description

My internship took place at TransPacific National Bank, in their San Francisco and Alameda branches. At the San Francisco branch, which was the loan office, my main responsibilites were transferring loan files from physical to digital form, utilizing scanners and othet technology, to help the bank prepare for an upcoming audit. At the Alameda branch, which I only spent around 5 hours at, I organized their storage room, and shredded alot of confidential documents they no longer needed. My internship took place for around 7 weeks, from the middle of June (the week after school ended) until the end of July.

Internship Journal Entry #1

To start, I have to say that its a big responsibility and great new adventure for me in getting to my internship, which is TransPacific National Bank in San Francisco. I have to take the bus to bart there and back, which has already proven to be a real interesting and new experience.

As far as my workplace goes, I have mixed feelings so far. I like the people I work with. On the other hand, though, so far, its really monotonous, boring work. Scanning, filing, and stapling is not as easy (or fun) as it sounds. Although I probably should have expected it, considering I am working at a bank. We’ll see how things pan out from this point.

Journal Entry #2

Nothing has really changed with the work. My hours are a little more flexible though. I can come in anytime between 10-12, and stay anytime from 1-3, which is pretty nice. I am also starting to understand different lingo regarding the loan files and other bank related work in an doing, and there’s a lot of different terms to learn, memorize, and apply to my work. Yeah thats about it.

Journal Entry #3

I learned this week that all my work on the bank’s loan files is helping them prepare for an audit, so now at least I know I’m doing work that is somewhat important, and not just completely useless. I’m starting to make some good progress too in the huge stack of loan files, so I’m a little bit proud of the work I’m doing, even though it doesn’t really take much skill or effort. I also just recently learned my supervisor’s name… it was a little bit awkward when I called him David Gonzalez, because thats not actually his name. Learned to always know my boss’s name (pretty obvious, but still very important to remember).

Journal Entry #4

Still continuing to do the same stuff, scanning the loan files, and organizing them on the bank’s computer files. Getting really close now to being done with scanning the whole room full of files (yes, an entire room - which is like hella, by the way). I starting also to get really bored with the work. I will continue until I am done, obviously, but its getting very tiring and repetitive.

Journal Entry #5

Finally finished at the SF offices, so i don’t have to take BART or anything anymore. Hopefully I did my work well, and helped TransPacific prepare well for the audit. So no more scanning, stapling and filing for me (I’m free!). Good experience for me though, as I now know for sure that I cannot survive working at a place like this , at least when i am doing work like that of what I did.

Journal Entry #6

I started at the Alameda branch this week. I have now finished all my required hours, but I am going to continue until I finish what they need me to do. I started by shredding a whole bunch of documents, but the shredder kept overheating, so I instead was assigned to organize the storage room, all the documents they had to keep. So a big change from what i was doing at the other branch. More stressful work, but much more enjoyable and moves along much faster.

Journal Entry #7

Done with my internship!!! Worked only one day this week, which i spent finishing the organization of the storage room. Had to move lots of christmas and halloween decoration, and a couple of medicine ball things. Thats about all I did, other than getting all my paperwork signed and my time sheets filled out (I am getting payed for my work - $11/hr!)

Internship Closing Report

I did my internship with TransPacific National Bank in San Francisco over this last summer. I was having trouble deciding what to do for it, so i asked my mom to talk to some people and the bank said they needed some help, so thats how I ended up doing it there. I went in and was actually kind of excited because it was a new experience and because i thought it would be cool if i could handle money and stuff. Thats not at all what I did. They were preparing for an audit and needed to transfer all of their physical loan files (it was the loan office) to the computer. And so, as an intern, they tasked me with this dirty work. This process went like this: I got a paper from my supervisor, Ganni, detailing all of the loan files they needed transferred. I would then go and grab a file from their loads of files (it was easily like 10 file cabinets full). I then took the file and unstapled all the documents, organized them into the different important sections regarding the loan file, and scanned the files, sending them to my outlook account. I would then organize them on the bank’s cloud drive, making sure to organize them based on the different pieces of the loan file, as this is an important piece for the bank to check in on how the loan is doing. I would also periodically check in with Ganni to tell him how i was doing, and how much work I had gotten done. That was my basic daily work schedule, and I would do that for around 4 hours everyday, about 2 days a week.

The major things I learned from this internship are how to work and how to act in a corporate work environment. Based on this experience, I have realized that I do not enjoy working in this kind of environment. I don’t know whether it was because I was an intern, or because that’s just the kind of work they needed done, but I was very bored by the work. It was monotonous and hard for me to keep my attention. Also I really hate copiers/ scanners now, although I have a strong knowledge of how they work and how to fix problems with them like jams and such.

My biggest problems during my internship were in the beginning, i had a hard time getting acquainted with the system I was working with and the process in which I transferred the loan files. It also took me a while to remember the names of all the pieces of the file, and how to recognize them. Once I learned how to work the system and the important things i needed to remember, it was fairly smooth moving. The only other thing was that there were so many files that after a while, it became challenging to organize them on the computer, and to find them in the file cabinets.

Another important thing I learned was punctuality and responsibility because I had to take public transportation to and from my internship. This also helped me with my independence, as now I am not at all scared of public transportation and all the wonders it gives to the world.

Overall, it was a great experience, however much I disliked the internship. I wish now that I had looked harder for a more appropriate internship regarding my future career path, like at a radio station or something like that. Maybe in college.
